Formal classroom learning has a lot of advantages when it comes to learning. The approach may be slower but they are well detailed, thought out and prepares the learner to the subtleties of the language.
For one thing, there is no simple memorization of words, or memorization of phrases. However, there are now online schools which actually offer academic approaches to learning Spanish where they offer exactly the same things as those in schools. They are a little stricter compared to the ordinary classes, but they still offer the same flexibility to their students.
One must remember that everyone is different and learning is different for everyone. What may work for one may not work for another. The only advice is to try out the online learning and see if it works, if not, then try out the formal classroom.
